Tim Vander Wouden, a senior in
Capital Region Career & Technical School's AYES Automotive Technician program who is also a Mohonasen High School senior, took
second place in the New
York State SkillsUSA Competition in Syracuse, April 9-11.
Vander Wouden
competed against his peers from throughout New York, testing
his technical and professional skills through hands-on and written contests. Most Career & Tech students attend class at the school for half a day and at their home high school for the other half day.
Vander Wouden is an outstanding student at the Capital Region Career & Technical School, earning high grade point averages and excelling in
his studies. By June, Vander Wouden will complete the second year of AYES Automotive
Technician.
More than two dozen students representing both campuses of the Capital Region Career & Technical School (Albany/Colonie and Schoharie) competed in the SkillsUSA state competition in Syracuse. Many of the students had scored top awards at the SkillsUSA Regional Competition held in March at Schenectady County Community College. Results of that competition are posted online at
www.bocescareertech.org.
"I am proud of the accomplishments of all of our students who competed in the SkillsUSA state and regional competitions,” said Dr. Hank Stopinski, Capital Region BOCES director of career and technical education. “These students are true leaders and role models. I also thank their teachers, Career & Tech staff and high schools for supporting these extraordinary young adults."
SkillsUSA (formerly known as VICA) is a national organization for career and technical students that promotes technical and professional growth and personal development through leadership seminars and workshops, campus activities, community service, and competitions. Each Career & Technical School campus has a student-run SkillsUSA chapter.
More than 1,200 local high school and adult students are enrolled in 40 programs of study offered by the Capital Region Career & Technical School. The school is operated by the Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and serves residents of Albany, Schenectady, Schoharie and southern Saratoga counties.
