2025-26 proposed budget focuses on school safety

On Tuesday, May 20, Mohonasen voters will vote on the proposed $71.7 million budget for the 2025-26 school year. The budget proposal includes a tax levy increase of 2.6%, which is at the district’s state-mandated limit. As a result, a simple majority of voters is needed for approval.

Residents will also elect two candidates to the Board of Education and decide on a proposition to purchase four buses: two wheelchair-accessible Type A 35-passenger buses for $215,000, and two 70-passenger buses for $195,000. Voting will take place in the Mohonasen High School Gym from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.

The proposed spending plan represents a $3.9 million increase over the current year. The majority of the spending increase (approximately $2.7 million) is attributed to rising instructional costs consisting mainly of salary and benefits.

The budget also supports the District’s ongoing commitment to school safety. As part of this initiative, Mohonasen is investing in a full-time school resource officer (SRO) dedicated primarily to the elementary schools. This addition enhances the district’s comprehensive safety plan by providing an added layer of security and fostering trusting relationships between students, staff and law enforcement.

Capital project construction is underway and will continue throughout the summer. Every school building will undergo significant infrastructure upgrades and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal working and learning conditions for students and staff. The plans include new roofing, pavement, and sidewalks at each of the four main buildings.

“Our proposed budget maintains all programming and offerings while remaining within the tax cap,” said Superintendent Shannon Shine. “It also improves security and, combined with the already approved capital project, enhances our campuses.”

Residents are invited to learn more and ask questions about the budget proposal at the public budget hearing and Meet the Candidates Night at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 12, in the high school LGI (large group instruction room).
