Water Testing

In September 2016, a state law went into effect that requires all public school districts to test water for lead. The law requires school districts to sample all water outlets currently or potentially used for drinking or cooking purposes in buildings that may be occupied by students and to submit those samples to a state-approved lab for analysis.

Lead-free Buildings No Longer Exempt

The original legislation for 67-4 had an exemption from sampling for any school building, facility, addition or wing with internal pluming that met the new definition of “lead-free” from sampling.

A building was deemed lead-free if the building was built after Jan. 4,2014 or a NYS Professional Engineer or Architect certifies the building to be lead-free. The revisions to Public Health Law remove these exemptions. All buildings will be required to conduct lead testing at all applicable outlets.

Pesticide Neighbor Notification Law

The Mohonasen School District has practiced Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for several years. IPM is the process for managing, preventing and suppressing pests with minimal impact on human health and the environment. Pesticides are only used as a last resort. The District uses certified applicators for pest control, and they are required to follow IPM procedures. IPM is successful when teachers, students, maintenance and the applicators work together. We have been fortunate so far that pesticides have not been needed. However, it is possible that they may be needed in the near future.

The district also has periodic treatment of the sports fields for weed and pest control. In this case, the district also uses certified applicators. New York State Education Law Section 409-H and State Education Department Commissioner’s Regulation 155.24, effective July 1, 2001, requires all public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools to provide written notification to all persons in parental relation, faculty, and staff regarding the potential use of pesticides periodically throughout the school year. Mohonasen CSD is required to maintain a list of persons in parental relation, faculty, and staff who wish to receive 48-hour prior notification of certain pesticide applications. If you would like to receive a notification, please download the Pesticide Notification Form.

Annual Fire Inspection Notification

The Mohonasen Central School District, on October, 2023, in accordance with NYS Education Commissioner’s Regulation 8 NYCRR Part 155.8, has performed an annual fire inspection of each school-owned facility. These reports were submitted to the NY State Education Department.  Updated Certificates of Occupancy have been posted at all schools. Mr. Robert Rossi, NYS Code Enforcement Official, performed the inspections for the district.  Mr. Rossi was accompanied by Michael Sherman, the District’s Director of Facilities. The report thereof is available at the Facilities Office at 2072 Curry Road for inspection by all interested persons.

Asbestos Management Plan

As required by the EPA since 1989, the Mohonasen Central School District has kept Asbestos Management Plans for the district. This notification must be given annually, stating that the Asbestos Management Plans are on file in each Principal’s office and collectively at the Facilities & Operations Office. These records are available for review during normal business hours. As required, periodic surveillances are conducted every six months. The most recent three-year re-inspection has been performed as required by February 2023. There are currently no projects scheduled that will disturb asbestos-containing building material.
