Bell Schedule

Draper Middle School operates on a modified “block schedule” with core subjects (math, English, science and social studies) meeting every other day. Here are some key things to know about Draper’s block schedule:

The schedule follows an alternating cycle: A day; B day; C day and D day. There are signs posted around the school to remind you what day it is in the cycle. A year-long schedule is on the Web. Note: The schedule is planned around scheduled holidays. If a snow day falls on an A day, the next day is an A day.

  • Student Arrival 7:30
  • Period 1: 7:35-8:15
  • Period 2: 8:19-8:59
  • Period 3: 9:03 – 9:48
  • Period 4: 9:52-10:32
  • Period 5: 10:36-11:15
  • Period 6: 11:19-11:58
  • Period 7: 12:02-12:41
  • Period 8: 12:45-1:25
  • Period 9: 1:29-2:10
  • Activity Period 2:15-2:50

Period 10 is held after the regular school day from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. This is a designated time for:

  • Additional academic help, when needed, with teachers;
  • Scheduled meetings of school clubs and other extracurricular activities;
  • Homework, particularly for student athletes;
  • Detention, if assigned; and
  • Parent-teacher conferences.

Be on time to class! There are only four minutes between the end of one class and the start of another. In many cases you will not have time to stop at your locker, so plan accordingly. If you get detained by a teacher, ask for a pass. Otherwise, if you’re not in your class by the time the bell rings, you’re tardy.

Questions about your schedule? Don’t be afraid to ask a teacher, a friend or stop down to the Guidance Office for help deciphering your schedule.

Attendance

As standards are raised, students really can’t afford to miss school. Even the best students will quickly fall behind when attendance drops or there is chronic tardiness. Parent support on this is essential.

Written excuses are required within three days. Students in grades K-12 who are absent from school must submit a written excuse, signed by a parent/legal guardian, within three days of the student’s return to school or their attendance record will permanently reflect an unexcused absence after this time. (In other words, no backdating of excuses will be allowed after these three days.) The excuse should indicate the reason for and the date(s) of the absence.

The difference between “excused” and “unexcused” absences. Absences, tardiness and early departures will be considered excused or unexcused according to the following standards:

  • Excused: absences due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, extreme weather
    conditions, medical appointments, religious observances, quarantine, required court appearances, music lessons and approved school-sponsored trips or activities.
  • Unexcused: any absence that does not fit the above categories, e.g., family vacation, hunting, babysitting, hair cut, obtaining a learner’s permit, oversleeping, etc.

When a student needs to miss school, parents are still asked to notify the school that day by calling the main office at (518) 356-8352. Upon their return, students should give their written excuses to their homeroom teacher or the attendance clerk at the start of the school day.

Students arriving late to school must sign in at the main office. If a student is late for a legitimate reason, parents are asked to provide a note within three days. Otherwise, unexcused lateness will result in detention.

School officials will take legal action when students are chronically late and/or absent. That said, guidance counselors at Draper Middle School are more than happy to work with parents of children with serious attendance problems. Don’t hesitate to call for ideas or assistance!

1:1 Chromebook Initiative

Mohonasen High School and Draper Middle School students will receive a school-supplied Chromebook, part of the district’s 1:1 initiative, which will provide a Chromebook to every student over the course of the next several years.

The following documents are required for students to receive a school-supplied Chromebook:

Each Chromebook includes the full Google Suite of products, allowing students to use the technology and tools both in the classroom and outside, such as for research and homework assignments. View the Chromebook Guide for additional information.

If you have any issues accessing the documents on this page, please contact Alissa Scott at ascott@mohonasen.org and an alternate version will be provided for you.

Dressing for Success

All students are expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to dress appropriately for school and school functions. Students and their parents/guardians have the primary responsibility for acceptable student dress and appearance. Teachers and all other district personnel should exemplify and reinforce acceptable dress and help to develop an understanding of appropriate appearance in the school setting.

Interpretation of the dress code will be at the discretion of the building administration. Specifics on the interpretation of the dress code are provided by individual buildings. In all cases, a student’s dress, grooming and appearance, including hair style/color, jewelry, make-up and nails, shall:

  1. Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process. Including but not limited to banning of spikes (i.e. dog collars), large pins, large chains, etc.
  2. Recognize that brief, revealing or see-through garments are not appropriate.
  3. Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be allowed, including but not limited to “Heelys,” roller skates, etc.
  4. Not include the wearing of hats/headgear inside the school except for a medical or religious purpose.
  5. Not include items that are vulgar, obscene, libelous or denigrate others on account of actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex.
  6. Not promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and/or encourage other illegal or violent activities or suggestive material.
  7. Not denote or represent gang affiliation.

Building administrators shall be responsible for informing all teachers, students and their parents of the student dress code at the beginning of the school year and any revisions to the dress code made during the school year.

If a student is deemed to be wearing clothing/footwear that is not in compliance with established expectations, or is a disruption, the parents/guardians will be contacted. The student will be asked to modify their appearance and/or the parent/guardian will be asked to bring new clothing/footwear to school.

Students who do not comply will be subject to the disciplinary procedures outlined in the Code of Conduct.

Success Indicators

Every class at Draper has Success Indicators. Success Indicators are the assignments, tests and projects that MUST be completed satisfactorily for a student to receive credit for the course. It’s as simple as that. The grade that the student earns above passing will depend on the timeliness and quality of the work.

If a student does not pass the course for the quarter or semester, he or she is placed on Academic Probation. At this point, the student has five weeks to make up the missing/unsatisfactory Success Indicators. If they are not completed, the failing grade for the marking period stands. If the missing/unsatisfactory assignments are completed, the grade received will be averaged in for that marking period. Teachers will identify an assignment as a “must do” if the student is failing the quarter; the assignment will be marked by “SI” before the title.

Success Indicators can be viewed, downloaded and printed through Mohonasen’s Parent Portal SchoolTool, along with student’s attendance and report card information.
